New Survey: 67 Percent Oppose Gas Tax Hike to Fund Transit Projects

Gasoline and fuel prices are finally dropping and leveling off. A new poll finds that two- thirds of Americans don’t want to cover an 18.4-cents-per-gallon gas tax to help pay for federal transportation projects. The cost of construction work has risen, resulting in a strained federal funding pot. The last increase came in 1993. “The current level of federal spending on transportation is about $50 billion per year, but the gas tax only brings in about $34 billion annually at its current rate,” says Keith Laing on TheHill.com.
